A rounded arch is the easiest Norman feature to learn, because its parts are visible from the ground with no special tripod or survey equipment. In the simplest terms, a Norman arch is a semicircular opening, often made of several stepped layers of stone, carried on two upright supports. The curve is a true half-circle, not a pointed or flattened shape. Once you know where to look, you can describe almost any example in less than a minute, using ordinary words.
In Castle Hedingham, this reading method has local company: the castle site is usually described as having a keep completed around 1140 and built of Barnack stone, and the wider estate keeps visible earthworks from earlier defensive phases. The aim here is not to decide whether any particular mason was French, English or local. The aim is to slow your eye down and separate the parts that are actually there.
What are the main parts of a Norman arch?
Start with five named parts and ignore anything else until you have placed them. The opening is the empty space you could walk through. The jambs are the two upright supports, left and right. The impost is the small ledge or block where the jamb meets the curve; it is the height from which the arch begins to turn. The voussoirs are the wedge-shaped stones that make the curve. The keystone is the stone at the centre of the curve, if one stands out.
A useful habit is to say each part out loud in order, from the ground up: jamb, impost, voussoirs, crown. That sequence prevents the common mistake of describing decoration before structure.
How do you tell whether an arch is Norman?
Look first at the overall shape. A Norman arch usually reads as a semicircle resting on two jambs. Pointed arches belong to later building phases, and shallow segmental arches also belong to later work. Look next at the underside of the curve for a smooth, continuous surface. Then look at the outer face for signs of the arch being built in separate ordered layers, one behind the other.
One common feature, though not universal, is a stepped or layered face: two or more concentric curves, so the arch appears to sit inside itself like a recessed frame. Often the inner curve is plain and the outer curves carry carving. When you see this, you are looking at one of the most recognisable traits people associate with Norman work. Do not assume every rounded arch you meet is Norman; some later builders copied the semicircle deliberately.
What order should you look at an arch?
A short checklist helps keep the description honest and repeatable.
- Shape: semicircular, pointed, or shallow. Write one word.
- Supports: are the jambs plain, or do they have attached shafts? Note whether each jamb is a single stone or a stack of smaller stones.
- Impost: is there a small ledge or block marking the springing point?
- Order: count how many concentric bands of stone make up the arch face.
- Voussoirs: are the wedge joints visible, and are they even in size?
- Keystone or centre: is one stone emphasised at the crown?
- Decoration: carving, chevrons, scallops or plain surface. Describe what you actually see, not what you expect.
- Context: what does the arch sit in? A doorway, a window, an arcade, an internal passage. Context often explains why it is rounded rather than pointed.
Use this checklist both for a single doorway and for a series of arches along a wall. Written down, it becomes a record you can compare on a second visit.
What details are most useful to record?
Photographs help, but a few notes help more. Record the number of stone layers in the arch face, because that count is one of the clearest differences between one arch and another. Record whether the jambs have shafts attached, because that changes the profile. Record the date and the weather, since low winter light often reveals joints that are invisible in summer shade. Record the approximate height of the impost from the ground if you can. That measurement is easy with a tape or by using your own height as a rough scale, and it makes the record comparable.
For a local case, Hedingham Castle's own history page says the keep was completed around 1140 and was built of stone from Barnack, which is a useful anchor when you are looking at arcs and openings there. What the page does not tell you is how each individual arch was built, so your own note is the missing piece.
How can you separate observation from interpretation?
Keep two columns. In the first, write only what is physically present: "two stepped orders, plain inner band, scalloped outer band, square jambs." In the second, write what you infer: "this looks like a doorway rather than a window because the opening is wider at the base." Separating these prevents a description from drifting into a claim you cannot support.
This matters when you read older guidebooks or websites. Enthusiastic writing sometimes attributes arches to named masons or to a single building campaign without stating evidence. You do not have to repeat that. A description of what is visible stands on its own and stays useful even when an attribution is later revised.
What mistakes should you avoid?
The most common mistake is calling every rounded arch Norman. Semicircles were also used later, sometimes for deliberate antiquarian effect, so shape alone is not decisive. The second mistake is confusing the arch with its frame: the layered stone face around a doorway is not the same as the structural curve itself. The third is describing carving before structure, so the reader never learns where the arch begins and ends. The fourth is assuming you need special vocabulary. Plain words such as upright, curve, wedge and ledge carry most of the meaning, and anyone can use them. A fifth is guessing the mason's nationality or training from the shape alone. That is an interpretation, not an observation, and should be labelled as such if it is offered at all.
How does reading one arch change how you see a wall?
Once you can pick out a semicircular curve, a wall stops looking like a flat surface and starts reading as a sequence of openings and supports. You begin to notice where arches were later blocked, where a window was inserted into an older opening, and where a wall has been rebuilt in a different stone. The castle's own history material notes the de Vere family's long association with the site and the surrounding estate, which is the context in which many of these openings were first made.
That local frame is also why our archive of the old parish pages remains useful. Early village websites often listed churches, chapels and buildings in plain, uncritical language, and those lists can still tell you which features local people thought worth naming.

Decision checklist before you write anything down: have you named the shape in one word; counted the layers; located the impost; checked the jambs; identified the context; and separated observation from inference. If any of these is blank, look again before forming a conclusion.
