The keep at Castle Hedingham was built with limestone brought from Barnack, in what is now Cambridgeshire. The castle's own history states the Norman keep was completed around 1140 and built of Barnack stone Hedingham Castle: Our History. This was not a local quarry product. The stone travelled roughly 50 miles from the Barnack area, a fact that tells us as much about Norman logistics and ambition as it does about geology.
If you stand in the village and look at the keep, you are looking at a building made from imported material. That is the interesting part. Why would a major Norman lord go to the trouble of moving stone across the English landscape when other building stone existed closer to hand?
What does Barnack stone look like in a wall?
Barnack stone is a limestone and typically shows a pale cream, buff or light grey tone when weathered and cleaned. It is often described as a freestone because it could be cut and worked in any direction, which made it useful for fine architectural details as well as for rubble core. In a Norman keep, the visible surface is usually squared blocks with tight joints. The stone can look warm in low sunlight and almost white under a bright overcast sky. Why was stone brought from so far away?

Compare the colour and texture of the stone in different areas. You will see variation, but also a general consistency that points to a single supply.
